Flow regulator trial - Smart metered customers

We want to see how much water they can save our customers.

By controlling the flow of water into a home, a flow regulator, saves water without customers needing to change how they use it or fit any water-saving products.

The flow regulator makes water flow steadier, which can also protect your internal plumbing.

We’re working with water industry consultant WRc and several other water companies on the trial.

We have randomly selected a range of smart meter customers to invite to take part and of those happy to be included we will select a small number to take part. 

When the trial is running, you don’t need to do anything – just carry-on using water as normal.

After the trial we would like your feedback on the device. We’ll send you a short survey to complete at the end and will send you a £25 online shopping voucher as a thank you.

You can have the device removed at any point during and after the trial.

It’s a simple device that fits onto the pipework near your smart meter.

Its job is to prevent excessive water flow, so you can use water more efficiently. This helps to save water and energy.

No. Your pressure will remain the same. The device limits the maximum flow rate, which is how much water comes out per minute.

You'll still have the same water pressure for everyday use. The device simply keeps the flow steady, so everything feels normal.

If several taps or appliances are running at the same time, you might notice a slight drop in flow. This is completely normal and won't affect your heating system or stored water supply.

Static pressure (the baseline force in your pipework) will stay the same because the regulator doesn't block or reduce pressure from the mains.

In the UK, Ofwat requires water suppliers to provide at least 9 L/min of flow at the property boundary. This device ensures flow is well above that minimum, maintaining pressure and supply standards.

The device is called the NRv2 LoFlo valve. It is made by Groundbreaker Limited, a UK-based manufacturer.

We will fit the device in early April.  

We’ll let you know when we arrive and will leave a card to let you know they have been fitted. 

We will:

• let you know when we arrive
• turn off your water for about 15-20 minutes while we fit the device
• leave you a card letting you know we've visited
• provide you with any other information you need.

After it has been fitted, everything will work as normal.

If your water looks cloudy after the installation, this is likely because of trapped air in the pipes.

Run your cold tap for a few seconds and it should clear.

We’ll use your water use data to understand how well the device works and how much water it helps to save.

We only collect the information we need for the trial, such as your address and smart meter reads.

We keep this information for the length of the trial and for up to six months afterwards. After that, we will delete it.

We share this data with our research partner, WRc , who analyse the results for us. It won’t be shared with anyone else.
