Water pipe responsibility

If you experience a leak, it is important to know which pipes you are responsible for and which ones we look after.

Who is responsible for different types of water pipes

Our pipework

We’re generally responsible for water mains and the pipes supplying your water between the water main and the boundary of the street and your property.

Leaks on these pipes will usually be in a public area, such as the road or pavement. You can report a leak on our pipework online.

We are also responsible for external stop taps and water meters, including their covers. You can report a damaged stop tap or cover online.

Your pipework

The section of pipework between our communication pipe and your house is your private supply pipe. This is your responsibility, even if you do not own the land the pipe runs through.

A leak on your private supply pipe will usually be outside your property, but on your land.

If you have a leak on your private supply pipe, follow our guide for leaks outside your property.

The pipes and fittings inside your home, including appliances, are also your responsibility.

If you have a leak on your internal plumbing, follow our guide for leaks inside your property.

Who is responsible for shared pipework

Sometimes two or more properties share a private supply pipe. In these cases, this pipe is usually jointly owned by those supplied by it. The owners are responsible for any repairs or maintenance.

If there is a leak outside your property, your plumber or private contractor should be able to confirm if your pipe is shared and which of your neighbours you share it with.

Your property records may also provide more details on which sections of pipework you are responsible for.

If the leak is on shared pipework, you should agree the repair with your neighbours and share the cost.

For more information about what to do, see our guide for leaks outside your property.

Request your own private supply pipe

If you share pipework, you may want to have your own private supply pipe fitted. This can make dealing with leaks easier. If you’re interested, call us on 01225 526222.

Request water main records

We hold maps that show the approximate position of water mains near your property. If you would like to see them, you can request water main records from us.
