Sewer pipe responsibility

If you experience an issue with a sewer pipe, such as a blockage, find out who is responsible for fixing it.

Who is responsible for different types of sewer pipes

Todo reimplement hotspot

Our pipework

We are responsible for maintaining the pipes beyond the boundary of your property. This is called the public sewer network.

Most shared sewer pipes are also our responsibility. These are pipes that connect two or more properties.

We maintain these pipes and will clear any blockages on them as quickly as we can. If you think there is a blockage on our pipework, please contact us.

Your pipework

You are usually responsible for the pipes that serve your home up to the boundary of your property or to the point where it joins with shared pipework, whichever is closest.

You are also responsible for all the pipes and fittings inside your property.

If there is a blockage on your pipework, use DrainSafe to find a private drainage contractor.

You are also responsible for:

  • private treatment systems, such as septic tanks, soakaways and private treatment works
  • systems which do not connect to the public sewer, such as rainwater drainage systems
  • internal drainage pipes or above-ground pipework, such as guttering or vent stacks.

Request sewer pipe records

We hold maps that show the approximate position of sewer pipes near your property. If you would like to see them, you can request sewer pipe records from us.

Request a new sewerage system

Parish and district councils or groups of homeowners can request a new sewerage system if their area lacks public mains drainage.
