Anglers can now use their own electric outboards

We are pleased to announce that customers can use their own electric outboards for the 2026 season following a review of boat fishing at our reservoirs.

About this change

Customers can bring their own electric outboards to use on a ‘rowing boat’ at Clatworthy, Hawkridge and Sutton Bingham.

All customers remain responsible for the condition, maintenance and any liability arising from their use.

We reserve the right to refuse the use of an outboard if our staff have any concerns that it does not comply with the rules or for any other reason that causes a concern.

We hope that this decision demonstrates our commitment to safety and listening to your feedback.

Our electric outboard rules

All electric outboards must comply with the following rules:

  • Only private electric outboards may be used.
  • They must be from a reputable manufacturer and be CE certified.
  • They must not be modified from their manufactured condition.
  • They must be used in line with the manufacturer’s guidance/manual.
  • Outboards with a power output equivalent to 4hp or more must have a manufacturer’s kill cord fitted.
  • Kill cords (if present) must be worn around the helm’s leg at all times when the outboard is running.
  • The helm must always remain seated and in immediate control of the boat when the outboard is running. Autonomous engines are not permitted.
  • Any external batteries must be contained within a suitable battery box. You will need to supply this yourself.
  • External batteries/boxes must be secured to the deck, using fittings/straps provided by Wessex Water.
  • The outboard must be available during the boat handover, so that our team can perform a quick visual check before use.
  • Customers must accept liability for the use of their own equipment. This includes any damage to their equipment or that of a third party, including Wessex Water.
  • It is recommended that customers hold suitable insurance to cover their equipment against damage and third-party liability.
